SuVolta’s Low-Power CMOS Technology Recognized for Potential for Broad Commercial Application
LOS GATOS, Calif. – March 28, 2012 – SuVolta, Inc., the developer of PowerShrink™ low-power CMOS technology that cuts power consumption in ICs by 50 to 90 percent, today announced that it was named the winner of the prestigious IEEE Spectrum 2012 Emerging Technology ACE Award. During the UBM Electronics Annual Creativity in Electronics (ACE) Awards event held yesterday, SuVolta’s Deeply Depleted Channel™ (DDC) device technology was recognized by IEEE Spectrum as the emerging technology having the greatest potential to achieve financial success in broad commercial application. In addition, SuVolta was a finalist for the 2012 Startup of the Year ACE Award and the 2012 Design Team of the Year ACE Award.
Reducing power consumption is generally regarded as the biggest challenge in chip design today, a problem which limits the functionality and battery lifetime in portable products including smartphones, tablets and notebooks. SuVolta won the IEEE Spectrum Emerging Technology ACE Award because of the significant impact its DDC device technology has on enabling dramatic reductions in IC power consumption while maintaining circuit performance.

SuVolta’s technologists redesigned the planar, bulk CMOS (complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor) transistor and related circuits, radically lowering the power consumption without the need for new fabrication equipment or design infrastructure.
SuVolta’s DDC transistor technology and device structure enables scaling (reduction) of two of the most critical transistor parameters – scaling of supply voltage, and scaling of transistor size to the sub-20nm node and smaller. The DDC technology is a component of SuVolta’s PowerShrink platform which applies across a wide range of integrated circuit (IC) products, including processors, SRAMs, and SOCs that are critical to today’s mobile products.
